AM trained in classical music for 10 years before being exposed to improvised and experimentalmusic.AM released a 1st album in 2006, Solace the grizzly.In2007,AngryBallerina record label released Sonic Live, recorded at Sonic in Lyon.TableOfTheElements released her 3rd album This silver string in 2008.Since 2011, A Max is part of the Bernard Fort study program in electro-acoustic composition

« This Silver String » is the transformative debut by French violinist Agathe Max. At times her work approaches the supersonic escape velocity of Tony Conrad; elsewhere, she introduces delicate repeating threads, then slowly weaves them into a fabric of vast, billowing sound more reminiscent of Steve Reich. With an elegant command of melody and a strident use of rhythm, Max manages to create a remarkably accessible collection of tracks, one that bridges the gaps between minimalism, post-classicism, the avant garde, krautrock, and plain old-fashioned pop. « This Silver String » is a genre-bender for certain, and a fine debut by any definition.

Agathe Max’s This Silver String makes for an often mysterious, sometimes even disturbing listen, at once elegant and unexpected. The « string » of the title refers neither to classical string instruments nor something like a guitar but both, with acoustic violin and electric guitar providing the basis of most of the tracks. However, neither one nor the other predominates, with the main instrument per song (or in each section of a song) often differing. There’s a sense at points of something from an older time coming through, as with the main violin melody starting « Ashes of Broken Furniture » combined with a bit of footstomping pace, but the shrieking background strings and overdubs adding some understated tape crumble scrabble and concluding chop-up fracture suggest something much more recent. Starting with a steady guitar loop of a few notes, the opening track –also the title song — later adds a quietly downbeat violin solo that floats away deep into the mix, further overdubbed against itself to create a gently lush if unsettled feeling. The result is less minimalist than simply minimal, though the core loop does provide a steady rhythm that’s slightly modified more with the passage of the song, while occasionally the violin parts become beautifully melodic moments or massed string sections. « Frederic, » in contrast, begins with strings full-on, developing into an all-around lushly nervous arrangement that turns further toward the near creepy as high parts swirl into a slow fadeaway around the beginning loop, which itself disappears into a low crumble of squalling, open-ended feedback that a slow, wheezing melody then plays over, leading into drones and what almost sounds like a distant, keening voice.

“Live in Milan, Italy” [URSSS]

I get it. Birkut (in a way) called me out on always looking up photos of Yolandi Visser and Rebel Wilson at work. Mayyyyyyyyyyyyyybe. But I’ll tell you what distracted me from my obsessive Goolge Imaging: Agathe Max “Live in Milan, Italy,” captured by none other than the legendary URSSS. Here, Max get’s length and twitchy in south Europe, bowing out some exploration in the electroacoustic range, and being all that is adventure.
Max got feverish earlier this year with her fourth album Dangerous Days, so give it a listen for some sizzle. And after, if you’re WAY strung out on 2013 releases, sort through the URSSS catalog. I guarantee you’ll find something there of interest as you wait in anticipation for 2014. Hi!
