Tomutonttu - Hylyt

Finska psihodelija Jana Anderzena (vođe benda Kemialliset Ystäväti i povremenog suradnika bendova Avarus, Tuusanuuskat ie Islaja). Onostrana dadaistička elektronika, etnokolaži, životinjski zvukovi, uvrnuti glasovni semplovi. Cvrkutanje još neodgonetnutog jezika izvanzemaljaca.

Tomutonttu is the solo disguise of Tampere's Jan Anderzen, head of Kemialliset Ystavat and (part-time) member of Avarus, Tuusanuuskat and the Islaja band. Anderzen is one of the focal points of Finnish underground music for the past 15 years with a zillion releases on some of the leading underground labels worldwide (Fonal, Ultra Eczema, Ducktails/Real Estate member Matthew Mondanile's New Images, Beta-lactam Ring, FatCat, Beniffer, etc.). Tomutonttu is one of his longest running projects and easily his most adventurous and consummate - combining otherwordly dada electronics, psychedelic ethno collages, animal noises, warped voice samples, synth flutter - all presented with a certain warmth and DIY charm that makes even the most chaotic freeform pieces accessible in an unexpected genial way. And despite of all the noise and liberalness there's always a strange compositional logic & strength at the core of Anderzen's music that is both inscrutable and heartwarming. The album is based on recycled tracks from several aborted releases(singles, compilations...), all revised; with newly recorded contributions by Dekorder label head Marc Richter (Black To Comm) adding a variety of electronic and acoustic noises. Hylyt is Anderzen's self-proclaimed “diploma work for the University of Bananafish". The LP is mastered & cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates&Mastering for maximum volume & fidelity.

Ever since hearing Kemialliset Ystavat's self titled 2007 album, I've had a big fond spot for Jan Anderzen. The meticulous and expertly mixed collage of sounds was really something to behold then, and that same style continues wonderfully on Hylyt, Anderzen's new album under his more prolific Tomutonttu moniker. What strikes me most about this work is how unified the seemingly random bursts of noise are around a central, almost compositional thread. Though obscured through the eschewing of traditional song templates, a composers edge is at work, with each squeal and squelch finding a specific home within Anderzen's far-stretching sonic cornucopia. Hylyt is focused on how timbres and textures interact and fit (or don't fit) together, and a constant sense of discovery pervades the album, as when bursts of worn piano notes butt against looped pitch shifted vocals, stuttering tom hits, and synth embellishments. On the surface this collage might seem almost overwhelming -- there is a lot going on. But again, the mixing and placement of each tone is precise enough to allow new templates to rise from the realms of noise. - Keith Rankin, Experimedia

Collecting rejected, recycled, revised recordings 2005-2011 of typically delirious, lusciously unhinged Finnish psychedelia from the incredible variable, Jan Anderzen. In a lot of science fiction movies, there comes a point where the aliens want to communicate with us, and they wish to choose a form pleasing to the human protagonists. To me, that’s often what experimental musicians unknowingly do every day: They (the good ones, at least) invent fresh audio guises we can enjoy for reasons, and from sources, most of us don’t quite understand. The problem is, even when artists get it spot-on, they often “blow-up” their sound for the warmth of a new, unfamiliar yet pleasing identity once a one-off record is in the can.
My point? I hope Tomutonttu stick with what they have going for at least a few more full-length adventures. But perhaps I should present the contents of Hvlvt in another way: A gust of wind blows through the curtains in my room like Idiot Wind; Corpus Christi is a tunnel with a constant barrage of ocean breeze, and it’s the perfect place to listen to the zapped-out space muzik of Tomutonttu. This one-man project by Jan Anderzen replicates the sounds of life, then spins them around and returns them in triplicate, achieving a glorious vision-quest high attributable to gangloads of Starving Weirdos LPs, Smegma, Landing, Emeralds, AC + T.Tones, Ensemble Economique stripped of its beats, Eric Copeland, Aaron Dilloway, flash.bat, and, least surprisingly, Avarus and Kemialliset Ystävät, as both count T-ttu’s Jan Anderzen as a member.
I’m not sure how Hylyt could be improved upon. Avarus were one of the first sub-level improv groups I ever sampled and gave a hot-damn about, so he’s had my ear for half a decade already, but Anderzen’s solo vision is so clear, concise, and relentless, powerful enough to cave in the chest. The barrage of rhythms hits like pins and needles on your head as your mind tunes to outer reaches, delicate and light (albeit occasionally relentless enough to break the skin). Milky effects chains swim and twist around in the air like Metroid monsters, a constant supply of fresh innovation channeling all manner of evil atrocities, from bug calls to frog croaks to flesh rips to cricket chirps to walkie-talkie tweaks to synthsterism.
The technology to create the Hylyt LP already existed, but we weren’t ready until now. See that you seek it out (and yes, it’s an import) before the future catches up with you. - Gumshoe

Kemialliset Ystävät head honcho and Avarus, Tuusanuuskat and the Islaja band part-timer Jan Anderzen returns to his solo Tomutonttu guise with another head frying selection of psychedelic sample mush on Dekorder entitled ‘Hylyt’.
This one is slightly different from recent releases as it reworks a variety of aborted releases (singles, compilations...) into new forms and introduces Marc Richter (Black To Comm lad and head of Dekorder) as a collaborator. He’s responsible for additional electronic and acoustic noise so his contribution is vague technically impossible to access but he’s in there somewhere.
‘Hylyt’ isn’t quite as soothing as say ‘Elavana Planeetalla’ or his self-titled effort for Beta Lactum Ring but it’s still an outstanding piece of work, bringing time mind earlier releases and perhaps that ‘Tomuuntuu’ LP where he hits on the Astral Social Club fireworks psych vibe. It’s super mashed up in terms of samples and sequencing making for pretty obscure listening but there are cohesive moments in the mix and, if you’re a fan of his previous efforts, this will no doubt be welcomed listening.
For the most part Anderzen is predominantly mashing voice samples into his usual aural collage which is probably why it sounds so possessed yet, as with all his records, it’s still strangely beautiful and most definitely worth your ear time. - www.normanrecords.com/
