Biography:
Leif Elggren is a Swedish artist who lives and works in Stockholm.
Active since the late 1970s, Leif Elggren has become one of the most constantly surprising conceptual artists to work in the combined worlds of audio and visual. A writer, visual artist, stage performer and composer, he has many albums to his credits, solo and with the Sons of God, on labels such as Ash International, Touch, Radium and his own Firework Edition. His music, often conceived as the soundtrack to a visual installation or experimental stage performance, usually presents carefully selected sound sources over a long stretch of time and can range from mesmerizingly quiet electronics to harsh noise. His wide-ranging and prolific body of art often involves dreams and subtle absurdities, social hierarchies turned upside-down, hidden actions and events taking on the quality of icons.
Together with artist Carl Michael von Hausswolff, he is a founder of the Kingdoms of Elgaland-Vargaland (KREV) where he enjoys the title of King. - www.leifelggren.org

Reviews
Aquarius Records (US):
One of two new Tapeworm cassettes on this week's list, the other being the truly strange Autodigest recording of 40 years of bootleg recordings, and then there's this, the latest from Swedish artist Leif Elggren, who has consistently delighted and baffled us with recordings that ranged from totally confusional high concept ultra minimalism, to gorgeous dark dronemuic, to full on NOISE, not to mention lots of writings and art projects, the most infamous being the creation of the “imaginary” country, he dubbed the Kingdoms Of Elgaland-Vargaland (KREV), a country which just so happens to have Elggren as its king!
All Animals Are Saints is a collection of live recordings, the first of which is called “The Life Of The Plants” which features Elggren discussing experiments that found scientists placing electrodes and various recording devices on plants to record their electrical fields, resulting in, a series of strange glitched out minimal soundscapes, which pepper Elggren's talk. A staticky sound field of muted grinding rumbles, stuttery clicks and scrapes, fluttery bits of low end, a distinct drone component, lots of hiss and shimmer, and subtly swooping effects and glitches. As Elggren's story about the experiments continue, the scientists introduce stress into the plants' lives resulting in sounds that are much more abrasive, more rhythmic, a dense cloud of skittery streaks of high end and crackling sheets of skree. Hard to say if we're meant to believe the veracity of Elggren's storytelling, there are plenty of sound artists who have explored the electrical output of plants, or if it's just another high concept art piece, either way it's quite entertaining, and the sounds are definitely fantastic.
The piece on the B-side is called “Swedenborg's Organ”, and again begins as a talk, about a man called Swedenborg, from the 1700's, a musician, a writer, Elggren 'plays' a recording of someone playing Swedenborg's organ, the sound of creaking floorboards, squeaks and moans, thumps and rumbles, precedes a truly haunting, seriously fucked up stretch of slowly unfurling, totally abstract, sort-of-organ music, it's hard to describe, notes moan and wheeze, partial melodies crumble in slow motion, a stumbling, lurching, slow motion, minor key lament, very reminiscent of the recordings of Gurdjieff, but with the addition of those never ending creaks and groans, it's very much like a busted organ being played on a rickety old pirate ship, and sounds very much like something Nurse With Wound could have conjured up!
Like all Tapeworm stuff, extremely limited, this one TO JUST 250 COPIES!!!

Boomkat (UK):
Swedish artist Leif Elggren has roots in various disciplines: he's a composer, visual artist and stage performer, having previously released on Ash International, Touch and Radium, with perhaps his most famous work being alongside Carl Michael Von Hausswolff for the Kingdoms Of Elgaland-Vargaland project. The first piece on this cassette is “The Life Of Plants”, recorded at London's Cafe Oto late last year. Elggren starts the performance as a spoken-word piece about electromagnetic fields associated with plants and then plays back a supposed sound recording of this botanical energy. It's conspicuously similar to a computer-generated glitch piece in the vein of Pita or one of his Mego contemporaries, but the act is worth going along with, making for a clever and very creative way of presenting music to an audience. The second piece, “Swedenborg's Organ” was recorded the day after “The Life Of Plants”, also in London, this time at The Showroom. This performance coincided with the launch of Elggren's DVD release, Death Travels Backwards, and begins with talk of the 18th century Swedish inventor, philosopher and mystic, Emanuel Swedenborg, who claimed to be in contact with the spirit world. Elggren plays back supposed recordings of his tinkerings with Swedenborg's organ (if you'll forgive the unfortunate turn of phrase), which allegedly resides in Swedenborg's summerhouse. Sure enough, the piece unfolds with wheezing organ sounds and what sounds like creaky floorboards. It's all very spooky and hypnotically rather lovely. The cassette is limited to 250 copies and comes highly recommended.

The Wire (UK):
It takes a certain wayward determination to run a cassette-only label in the 21st century, eschewing the ubiquitous ease of CD-Rs in favour of the clunky plastic artefact. Since 2008 [2009 - ed.], The Tapeworm has been justifying that effort with a series of releases that make explicit use of the benefits and limitations of the format, and each of the disparate works that make up this latest batch highlights, in its own way, the enduring peculiarities of magnetic tape.
Swedish conceptual/performance artist Leif Elggren taps into the cassette's long association with spoken word. “The Life of Plants” provides a treatise on the emotional experiences of plants, coupled with understated electronic interpretations of vegetable moodswings; and, on “Swedenborg's Organ”, a brief lecture on the Swedish philosopher introduces a field recording on Elggren playing the eponymous instrument, with the wheezing, rhythmic creak of the bellows building a lulling, nautical reverie.

Vital Weekly (NL):
Leif Elggren was in London in November 2009 to present his DVD release “Death Travels Backwards” (see Vital Weekly 710). The first night he read a story, followed by music of a highly strange kind. It sounds electronic, with all sorts of peeps with intervals of a varying length - it could be processed voice. It has that sort of minimalist sound that we know and love Elggren for. Then the story continues and more processed sounds. An odd piece. The b-side is entirely instrumental with some odd sound from a small organ, and what seems to be the squeaking of a door or some other object being rubbed. Perhaps not indeed the sort of thing to put on a CD release, but surely quite captivating. A great private document.

The Ghost Orchid

Leif Elggren narrated the spoken word passages for PARC's "The Ghost Orchid - An Introduction to EVP". The ParaPsychic Acoustic Research Cooperative [PARC], in association with Ash International, is proud to present the first ever fully comprehensive investigation into the paranormal phenomenon of EVP, otherwise known as Electronic Voice Phenomenon. Without doubt EVP falls into the category of the paranormal alongside other unexplained mysteries such as ufology, life after death & poltergeist activity. The listener is guided through a collection of strange and mysterious voices that have appeared without explanation onto the tapes of EVP researchers. Included with the CD is a 24 page booklet containing commissioned articles which cover the conflicting views surrounding the EVP. Actual voice samples are reproduced here for the first time on compact disc: Polyglot Voices, Public Service Broadcasting, Interruptions across the airwaves, Singing Voices, Instant Response Voices, and the extraordinary Alien Voices. The CD also includes a commentary by the artist Leif Elggren (in English), and recordings of the work of Raymond Cass, England’s leading EVP researcher, and original member of the Fortean Group, and the Latvian EVP researcher, Dr. Konstanin Raudive. This CD is available from the TouchShop here.

The New Immortality

The New Immortality is a non-periodical tabloid paper, magazine or fanzine started in 2003. The New Immortality relates to the book with the same name by John William Dunne, London 1939. The New Immortality was also the title of an exhibition at Galleri Arton A in Stockholm, November 1990 by LE. The New Immortality is also the title of two seven inch vinyl releases by LE; the first released on Anckarström/Firework Edition in 1992 and the second released on Firework Edition Records in 1998. The New Immortality (the first seven inch) was cut with a drypoint needle and a record player. I was shouting loudly over and over again the words: "I am talking about if I only could talk!" The needle, resting on the wax in my gentle hand has hopefully registered something of the vibrations of my voice.

As If I Was My Father

AS IF I WAS MY FATHER.
"My father dies 1996; he reaches 90 years old; he is not my real biological father; I was adopted when I was two years old, anyway I have always considered him my father. He died and I have a vivid image of his appearance during his last days in the home for old people. I dress up in the same sort of underwear and take several photos of myself sitting in one of his favourite chairs. I am him and he is me."

DEATH TRAVELS BACKWARDS.
DVD digipack with ten short films by LE and text by Brandon LaBelle and LE. ”Death Travels Backwards documents Elggren's ongoing engagement and use of video. Cataloguing a collection of works from 1999 to the present, Death Travels Backwards delivers an important overview of the artist's pursuit of the hidden secrets and spectral enigmas found within the everyday. What marks Elggren's video works is an under-standing of how image and sound work together to infuse the electronic material with an element of the uncanny, and to supply the imagination of the viewer with a glimpse onto infinity.” Released by Errant Bodies Records #05 (2009). THE TIN-CAN CROWN. Before I go to bed I always use to sit down at the bedside cutting empty tin-cans and make them look like crowns. I use a heavy scissors and cut them roughly. I like the sharp edges and the careless shape. I make two or three almost every night. Mostly I use cans that have contained chopped tomatoes. I wash them and remove the paper labels. When they are ready I throw them under my bed. Today I think I got more than 2000 cans there under the bed in the dark.

THE BABYLONIAN ROYAL CROWN. This is an air-filter from a SAAB 96. It suits my head perfectly and it have a surprising resemblance to a Babylonian Royal Crown that can be seen on 4000 years old stone carvings from the old Babylonian empire. The background is like the following: 1986 I went down to Copenhagen together with my friends and collegues Göran Littorin, Lars Hoffsten and Mathilda Henmark. We was driving down in Görans SAAB-96. We parked the car in Malmö and took the ferry over to Copenhagen. We stayed in Copenhagen for a couple of days, met some friends and had a good time. On our way back, it was late in the evening, we did not get the car starting. Some problems with the fuel supply. We worked all night trying to solve the problem. Early in the morning we removed the air filter and, by some reason, I just tried it on my head and it was perfect, the size was perfect (and the car started a bit later). I was so happy and asked Göran to give it to me while changing to a new one. And here we are!

THE DEATHMASK OF CHARLES XII. Actually this is not a real deathmask taken as a casting from the kings face. -In 1718, a few days after the death of the king, the French sculptor Simon Josse modelled the original for this "deathmask" beside the king´s bier in Uddevalla, Sweden. I have used a bronze copy of the original as a source for this copy. I sell it as a multiple (500 copies) on Firework Edition for SEK 500 (plaster version).

THE ENTRANCE TO THE SEWER SYSTEM. This is the entrance to my sewer system. It is related to many different sub structures. It is always an enticement to follow the whirlpool down to other strategies; to the rats and the pale alligators and the bacterias and the worms and the unwanted children and the false teeth and the finger nails and the forbidden ejaculations and the leftovers and the canaries and the lost dreams of a better future and the stolen money and the blood and the stinkpots and the bitterness and the many hangovers and the shame and the thrown up pills and the tangled hair of single living old women and the kidney stones and the backbiters and the creeps and the wasted flowers and the drugs and all the other amazing or non-amazing planets in the hole of the universe.

THE THIRD POWER. Performance artists Marja-Leena Sillanpää, Pär Thörn and Leif Elggren explore the aesthetic implications of breakfast chats, printing ink and mishearings. They explore the fragmentary orchestra pit of music, the heroic features of everyday life and the emptiness of mass media. This performative work is realized through cut-up-technique, voice, improvisation and movement. Tredje statsmakten [The fourth estate of power] [The Third Power] has performed at Inkonst in Malmö and Weld in Stockholm (Sweden), Röda Sten In Göteborg (Sweden) and Gallery Myymälä in Helsinki (Finland). A new book called Tredje Statsmakten will be released in Malmö on the 6th of November 2010. http://www.myspace.com/tredjestatsmakten

Three Aural Interpretations of a Drawing by Eric Lanzillotta.
In 2007 a posthumous release was done to fill in the missing catalog number NOM28. Three Aural Interpretations of a Drawing by Eric Lanzillotta is exactly that, and features specially commissioned recordings by Jeph Jerman, Leif Elggren and Ralf Wehowsky. This 7" record was pressed on clear vinyl in an edition of 250 copies and was mastered at 33 RPM to hold the 12 minutes of sound. This is all packaged in a poster sleeve that opens up to reveal the original drawing that inspired the sounds. This was a one off release, and no further releases on Anomalous Records are planned. This release is now sold out, but should still be available from a few other distributors. More about this here

GOTTESDIENST. iDEALrecordings, iDEAL039, CD, 500 copies, 2005.11.30: Henrik Rylander (ex-Union Carbide Productions, also active in the Skull Defekts) and Leif Elggren (KREV, Firework Edition, the Sons of God) performed at Spire, live in Masthuggskyrkan in Gothenburg, wich was curated b Mike Harding of Toch, as part of Goteborg Art Sounds 2005. This long piece was executed at an extreme volume, and it was seriously painful to experience the damn thing. But here it has mysteriously become very listenable and even revealing a rhythm. It is a truly powerful piece by two of Swedens cutting edge artists. Features two remixes, one by the Idealist and the comeback of sound terrorist C.P.U. A very mysterious release. Even to us. Föregångarna heter: The North Is Protected (2011), Something Like Seeing In The Dark (2011), Physiological Frequencies (2009), Genealogy (2005). "Det är så märkligt, min far håller på att återfödas med hjälp av en tånagel på min vänstra fot. Ringtånageln om man kan säga så. Den har varit lite liksom komplicerad länge den tånageln. Tjock och gul och ful och pinsamt berörd har man blivit när man tittat på den, men ingen har fått se den, den har hållits undan för de andra. Skämts bort, liksom. Fast med skam och skuld. Har jag gjort något fel?"

UNDER FREUD'S COUCH
26 November 2012 at 7pm 'UNDER FREUD'S COUCH' by Leif Elggren at the Freud Museum, London. Curated by Lucia Farinati. Performance, presentation and discussion. Join us this evening for a special performance and presentation by Leif Elggren, followed by a discussion between the artist and curator Lucia Farinati, chaired by Freud Museum curator, Ivan Ward. Freud’s iconic psychoanalytic couch; an object which besides being a museological symbol that epitomizes the life and work of the father of psychoanalysis, is also a poignant listening device for recording the unheard and the unseen. It was on this couch, which inhabited the consulting rooms of both 20 Maresfield Gardens in Hampstead and Berggasse 19 in Vienna, that patients were listened to; a liminal space where free association and dreams were gathered and, in a certain way, a key listening point for the development of Freud’s analytical work. In this constructed space, a new form of listening was made palpable through the discovery of the unconscious and the birth of psychoanalysis. - Using the microphone as a kind of third ear, Elggren’s recording under the couch brings to the forefront the potential to understand musical listening almost like a psychoanalytic treatment. 'Under the Couch' is a new CD release by Leif Elggren on Firework Edition Records with a critical text by Lucia Farinati and will be available on the night. Leif Elggren is a writer, visual artist, book publisher, stage performer, and composer based in Stockholm. His varied and prolific output routinely involves dreams, subtle absurdities, and social hierarchies turned upside-down. His audio work, mostly conceptually based, but also often created as the soundtrack to an installation or performance, has been released on labels such as Ash International, Touch, Radium and his own Firework Edition. Lucia Farinati is an independent curator and researcher based in London. She is the Director of Sound Threshold, a long-term research project which explores the relationships between site, sound and text.

UNDER THE COUCH (Firework Edition Records, FER 1100): Wo hat der Schwede nicht schon Hamlets Vater, Gottes Sohn, Marxens Gespenst, dem Leben nach dem Tod, den Müttern, den Träumen und den Erinnerungen nachgespürt - im Schlaf (Zzz...), unter Pflastersteinen (The Cobblestone Is The Weapon Of The Proletariat), in der Latrine, in Claude Mellans Gravur des Schweißtuchs der Hl. Veronika (The Sudarium Of St Veronica), in Emanuel Swedenbords Sommerhaus (The Summerhouse (Stockholm)), unter dem Bett (45 Minutes From Underneath The Beds). Was verät nun Freuds Chaiselongue? [BA 74 rbd] [Bad Alchemy 74, Rigobert Dittmann]

RADIO BOREDCAST NOW ARCHIVED AT WFMU! 20 June 2012. We are very pleased to inform you that Radio Boredcast has now been archived in its entirety at WFMU. Given that Radio Boredcast is a 744-hour online radio project, we consider today, The Longest Day, a most appropriate time to make this announcement. Curated by Vicki Bennett (People Like Us) with AV Festival, Radio Boredcast responds to our ambiguous relationship with time - do we have too much or not enough? - celebrating the detail, complexity and depth of experience lost through our obsession with speed. BASIC.fm first hosted the project through the duration of AV Festival (1-31 March 2012) and now this unique and colossal archive is accessible for "Listen on Demand" at freeform radio station WFMU here. An impressive list of participants were invited to create new radio shows, audio works and mixes in response to the AV Festival theme "As Slow As Possible" and thematic playlists and contextual programming surround these creations. Thematic playlists run throughout from "Acconci" to "Zzz" programmed by Vicki Bennett. This has been a great project to curate and create, and although the theme is Slowness, we urge you to get over there now and have a listen! Listen to Radio Boredcast info here. Co-commissioned by AV Festival info here and BASIC.fm info here. Vicki Bennett info here. Blog entry info here. WFMU info here.

PAROLE #2: PHONETIC SKIN / PHONETISCHE HAUT
Annette Stahmer (ed.). Salon Verlag, Cologne (in cooperation with Errant Bodies Press, Berlin/Los Angeles), 2012. 112 pages + CD with sound examples. PAROLE #2 is the second issue of a series of publications investigating the materiality of language. Parole #2: Phonetic Skin / Phonetische Haut is concerned with skin and its relation to language. The term “skin” is used here as a metaphor. It represents the surface, the protective sheath of not only the human but also of other “bodies” like the walls of a house, a product’s packaging, the earth’s surface, and so on. Skin describes the boundary between within and without, and is simultaneously a sensitive instrument for communication, directing external information inwards, as well as outwardly expressing inner states. “Phonetic Skin” is a poetic term serving as a starting point for a discussion on the connection between communication/language and skin. - 18 international theorists, artists and designers present projects in “Phonetic Skin” which illuminate various aspects of this theme, including voice phenomena, talking drums, dermographism, clothing, as well as works on gardens, graffiti, and book bodies. - See also: Parole #1: The Body of the Voice / Stimmkörper, Salon Verlag Cologne, 2009. Parole is distributed by Vice Versa (Berlin), Les presses du réel (Dijon) and DAP (New York).

UNDER THE COUCH. A new CD on Firework Edition Records by LE. The booklet contains an essay by Lucia Farinati. - This recording was made under the famous couch of Dr. Sigmund Freud at 20 Maresfield Gardens, Hampstead, London. Sigmund Freud (1856-1939), founder of the Psychoanalysis, lived here 1938- 1939. The house is now the Freud Museum [www.freud.org.uk]. From the museum’s website: 'Freud’s couch, upon which his patients would comfortably recline during psychoanalytic sessions, was normally covered by an Oriental rug throw. Underneath the throw, it is a plain and simple structure, raised by a scroll and pad at one end, though fully upholstered with springs and horsehair stuffing. The couch is rather short, so that the patient would not lie horizontally, but with the head quite high, supported by several cushions and pillows. According to Freud’s wife Martha, in an interview with Princess Marie Bonaparte in 1938, the couch was given to Freud by a grateful patient, a Madame Benvenisti, in about 1890.' - Duration: 60' 05''. Recorded on the 14th of September 2011. Recording devices: ZOOM H4n, Voice Recorder Diasonic DDR-5000, Mini Cassette Recorder Olympus S701. Cover and label photographs by LE taken during the recording session. Many thanks to the Freud Museum for so generously having me under the couch. Special thanks to Lucia Farinati and Dr. Sigmund Freud. FER1100 (P)&(C) Leif Elggren, Stockholm, London, New York 2012. BIEM/N©B LE is published by Touch Music [MCPS] London

SWEDENBORG EPIC. A Short Reprise for Emanuel Swedenborg, Who Went Insane, But For Very Good Reasons. Exhibition from 05.02.2012 - 05.03.2012. Private view: Saturday 04.02.2012, from 19.00 - 21.00. Swedenborg Epic. is an exhibitionary reprise offering a domestic space to artists to create a work around three accounts upholding the charge of insanity brought against Emanuel Swedenborg (Stockholm 1688 - Wapping, London 1772). These accounts, largely based on linger and hearsay, have been propagated by Swedish pastor Mathesius, Methodist leader Wesley, and questionably by the Moravian Brockmer as based on events taking place during Swedenborg’s stay at Brockmer’s house in London during 1744. Arguably, the possible fictionalisation and extravagance of these accounts have lead to a certain degree of degeneration in regard of Swedenborg’s reputation, both during his late days and posthumously. Taking these peculiar and rather ambiguous accounts as its leitmotiv, the project opens a space for speculation and image-correction of Swedenborg’s stature and meaning in the present. The exhibition, curated by Niekolaas Johannes Lekkerkerk, Rianne Groen and Nina Swaep, features works and new commissions by Dave Charlesworth, Kitty Clark, Leif Elggren, Bentley Farrington and Marenka Gabeler. Swedenborg Epic. event on Facebook. 4 Brockmer House, Crowder Street, London E1 0BJ, UK.

YELLOW & BLACK New York now focusing on Manhattan, Brooklyn & Queens. Opening: December 11, 2011, 8 pm. On the sidewalk in front of 102 W 23rd Street (between 6th and 7th Ave.), New York City (A special thanks to Ken Montgomery.) and simultaneously continuing and spreading out all over the city and beyond. Wherever or whenever you may find Yellow & Black images, signs, symbols, etc., they are part of this project. This is possibly the largest public art work project ever done on this planet. The project was initiated in 1977 and has since then manifested all over the world in many different forms and shapes — mostly in our shared man-made society, (but not always, no, not always).
§3 CLAIM: "I hereby lay claim to this symbol, sign, icon — the combination of black and yellow — wherever it may appear in this or any other world, in whatever shape, form, pattern or composition, be it civil or military. I hereby claim to be its originator and owner." (Leif Elggren, Stockholm 1977) – This project have found its way in different shapes and situations through the years. A statement of legitimity is put out, a statement of the self placed in the hierarchic order of the world. – Am I the created creation that in turn create new creations or am I the created creation that create my own creator?

HAUNTINGS
Secret and Uncanny Presence in Media, Art and Pop. - For as long media have been in existence, people have believed that these media maintain a special connection to the beyond. Writing, photography, the sound recording, the filmic image – each one is the placeholder for an absent presence, for a past- or future elsewhere whose after-effects linger in the here and now. Under the current conditions of open and electronically available archives, these symptoms are growing more radical: there is virtually no mediatic artefact in existence today that is not haunted by – or, even, that does not explicitly invoke – a “spectre” or “ghost” from the past. “Hauntings” is an interdisciplinary project by Thomas Edlinger and Christian Höller. Hauntings – Ghost Box Media. Exhibition 25.9. – 17.12.2011. Kunstverein Medienturm, Josefigasse 1, 8020 Graz. Opening 24.9., 11 a.m. Coproduction steirischer herbst. The open, electronic archives of our time radicalise this suspicion even further, as there is hardly a media artifact left that isn’t haunted by a ghost of the past. What are the characteristics of this secret presence or uncanny absence in contemporary art? How is the facticity of the simulacrum, the “presence of a ghost” (Jacques Derrida) manifested? What undead beings haunt an art whose main characteristic is its claim to contemporaneity? What “sinister resonances” (David Toop) are currently at work here? Based on a small cross-section of a wide range of media, visitors can experience all the things that continue to pursue and haunt us in today’s art forms. With Yto Barrada, BIT Bureau of Inverse Technology, Minerva Cuevas, Leif Elggren, Michael Esposito/Carl Michael Von Hausswolff, Harappian Night Recordings, Julian House, Mike Kelley/Scanner, Jakob Kolding, Claudia Larcher, Moon Wiring Club, Baron Mordant, The Otolith Group, Walid Raad, Dr. Konstantin Raudive, Markus Schinwald, Zineb Sedira, Alejandro Vidal, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Hans Weigand. 17.09. - 18.11.2011 SLEEP DISORDERS
Curateurs: Marion Auburtin - Danielle Igniti - Benjamin L.Aman. Artistes: Marion Auburtin - Leonora Bisagno - Sneja D. - Claire Decet - Leif Elggren - Elisabeth Flunger - Samuel François - Gran Horno - Benjamin L.Aman - Sébastien Maloberti - Christoph Meier - Claudia Passeri - The Sons of God - Brigitte Zieger. THE IDIOT. The following text and images were rejected by The Wire after inviting LE to contribute to The Inner Sleeve in March 2010:
A trickster, a dancing young prince, that super-energetically moves between the lines, between the words, without being hurt, that moves freely. And even if this is true, the problematic issue in this case, there is an old incomprehensible future that obviously awaits in the background. Like that heavy old painting by Richard Bergh of the mad poet Gustaf Fröding sitting in his bed with his arms crossed under his patriarch beard - like a Shakespearian ghost experience. And another one; the mad painter Ernst Josephson leading the military parade to the royal castle dressed in a morning gown and a red fez. (Unfortunately he never made it to the castle. They arrested him before that.) With a catwalk fashion attitude and a free-at-last elegance (outside the asylum); ready to go. Major stimuli. Like the hands that are dancing by themselves, but at the same time together, strongly connected, as always. And the party is somewhere else, but the focus is still here. On the beach. Like it should be. The subjective and inevitable conviction that this is the centre of the world, the centre of everything. And the black and white garden outside the villa where all the others are living their lives, are having their fun. But you and me here, in the dark. Like the most important dialogue of all dialogues. Like talking to the most powerful woman in the world and at the same time trying to pee without unbuttoning the fly. Like those scars that never go away. And the open sea, the ocean, in the background. Still possible. But the lack of real worldly power (from an inferior position) creates an inner freedom where everything is accessible, within reach, all the time, twenty four hours a-day. Never closed. Like a dream in a dream. Like kids with total connection. Like Friedrich Jürgenson recording without a microphone. With open focus. That this is what we can do. Inverting the structure, the inferior position, and claim (pointing) in the opposite direction - "There goes the freedom line!" But no one goes free, it is said. Nevertheless, everyone keeps themselves going with the hope, the hope to be exceptional. Like the rich and the powerful, the only ones in human society that have the possibility to achieve immortality. No others, of course. The rest will be sedimented down in the shadows, like dust. Soil. Like it is. But still, the inevitable longing for more, to remain. Because everything is so fearful. Like in the darkest night. Like when the forest starts moving. Do plants feel fear? - All animals are saints. And those goddamn saint-eaters ready to get their teeth into skin and bones. Like old mummies incarnated backwards in newborn babies. Like when Amenhotep the fourth gave birth to his own father, to his own mother and consumed them and digested them easily. Like a first glimpse of a new era, another way of organising society, the world. And then everything went black again. Went back to the old routines, to the old traditions in order to feel safe, or safer. Because everything is totally a question of fear, a question of horror. But underneath, the bridging from one point to another, invisible during a long period of time, during generations, and then suddenly up in the daylight again: Materialising. Being visible. Influencing. Like it should. Like the subjective, but inevitable, belief that this is the centre of the world, that this is the centre of everything. And we have to deal with it - like being born by two idiots, but still enjoying the title of a King and as well being a son of God - like myself for instance. (Leif Elggren, Stockholm, March 2010)

Sohrab remix album | You Are Not Alone l
Leif has contributed a remix to Iranian artist Sohrab's new release. Release date: 10th June 2011. 320 kpbs - 1 track - 37:09. [Touch # Tone 42 DR1]
Photography: Jon Wozencroft. The first in a series of reworkings of Sohrab material by artists showing solidarity to his cause... all label and artist money goes towards the fund for his appeal against the refusal to be granted political asylum in Germany...
As you may know, Sohrab managed to leave Iran late last year for Germany, where he appealed for political asylum having been interned in Brandenburg. This appeal has failed and he is trying to raise funds to appeal against this latest ruling. If he fails, it is probable that Sohrab will be flown back to Iran and arrested at Tehran Airport... Europe is reassessing its policy to 'immigrants' on a daily basis, partly because of the rise of the political right, but also because of the influx of refugees from the 'arab spring'. The vast majority are being unceremoniously shipped back to their point of origin... This release is a fund-raiser to help pay for a lawyer to help with his appeal against the ruling. 100% of Artist and Label money from this release will be donated directly to the appeal fund. You can donate more if you wish simply by purchasing multiple copies of this release. Touch mix content providers: JG Thirlwell - Susanna (Uxorial mix) 4:48 | Achim Mohné - Milan Knizhak mix#1 (side a) 6:05 | Jóhann Jóhannsson - Zarrin (remix) 6:01 (Mixed by Jóhann Jóhannsson at NTOV, Copenhagen, 24th May 2011) | Anonymous - Triple Exposure 9:10 (Mastered by a different Anonymous 24th May 2011) | Leif Elggren - No One Really Knows (destroyed) 11:46

The 6th MOMENTUM BIENNIAL
Imagine Being Here Now, Momentum / Punkt Ø. Opening Party Saturday June 18th, 8 pm, at Momentum kunsthall, Moss, Norway. Open: 18 June - 2 October 2011. The 6th Momentum Biennial, Imagine Being Here Now, is rooted in a conviction that the complexities of orientating the world depend on factors of memory and imagination and that the process, whatever it may be, inescapably transpires within a set moment and location. Indeed, we usually emphasize the latter when considering human experience, but for each individual time and space expands in unforeseen dimensions, back and forth, up and down. The inherent present of each person does not only involve transitory impressions of the here and now but continuously deals with the past and expectations of the future. Besides existing in time and space, we have the ability to imagine being somewhere else entirely, in any other place at any other time. Imagine Being Here Now presents works of art by fifty international artists in an exhibition venturing to stretch out, pin down and animate the experience of time in standstill, motion and reverse, and that of place through presence and absence. Within a specific exhibition design that engages the viewer in a distinctly alternative manner of participation and presence, the multitude of perspectives that relate to this attempt are presented in the works of art on display. Consequently, the exhibition retains a multifaceted approach both within the venues in Moss, but also in other Nordic countries through an organized itinerant performance event and, furthermore, in a two-part publication meant to thoroughly consider the matter at hand. - To parse the continual deliberation regarding the experience of presence, what time is and the widely diverse analogies describing it is, of course, truly an endeavor. But it is the sincere aspiration of the curatorial group and the participating artists that the exhibition explores the human experience and its spatial conditions and that it discusses contextual time where imagination is a key feature in producing, sharing and experiencing. Artists: Øystein Aasan (NO), Caroline Achaintre (FR), Harpa Árnadóttir (IS), Michael Baers (US), Margrét H. Blőndal (IS), Paolo Bottarelli (IT), KP Brehmer (DE), Elina Brotherus (FI), Heman Chong (SG), Bruce Conner (US), Jason Dodge (US), Aleksandra Domanović (RS), Leif Elggren (SE), Luca Frei (SE), Ellie Ga (US), Ásdís Sif Gunnarsdóttir (IS), Hamza Halloubi (MA), Magnús Logi Kristinsson (IS), Matti Kujasalo (FI), Oliver Laric (AU), Karl Larsson (SE), Ann Lislegaard (NO), The Long Now Foundation (US), Lorenzo Scotto di Luzio (IT), Katarina Lőfstrőm (SE), Daniel Medina (VE), Maria Miesenberger (SE), Naeem Mohaiemen (BD), Ulrike Mohr (DE), Eadweard Muybridge (UK), Simon Dybbroe Møller (DK), Rosalind, Nashashibi (UK), Ioana Nemes (RO), Finnbogi Pétursson (IS), Prinz Gholam (DE/LB), Raqs Media Collective (IN), Mandla Reuter (ZA), Nikolai von Rosen (DE), Hans Rosenstrőm (FI), Andreas Siqueland (NO), SEX TAGS (NO), Simon Starling (UK), Fiete Stolte (DE), Superflex in collaboration with The Propeller Group (DK/VN), Ines Tartler (DE), Roi Vaara (FI), Kjell Varvin (NO), Bettina Camilla Vestergaard (DK), Wooloo (DK), George Young (UK). THE NORTH IS PROTECTED (Death in Venice)
(Sitting in the shallow water at the Lido seashore with Fukushima in the background.)
From noon to sundown, we are contemplating the horizon, observing the sky. Overviewing heaven and earth. Is there any hope? Are there any possibilities for human life to survive on this planet? - You are most welcome to join us in this melancholic moment to meditate over beauty, death, time, fear and sadness in our mutual existence of today. 1 June, 2011 from 11.00 onwards.
